A Basic Intro To Facial Hair Care

Hey, thanks for coming back to the Shave Essentials blog! Our regulars are probably used to us providing articles regarding all things shaving, but today we’re going to switch it up and talk about what you should be doing in between shaving your face.

That’s right, today we’re talking about facial hair care basics! Keep reading to learn more.

Keep It Clean

Like any hair, the key to keeping it healthy is to keep it cleaned and cared for. To do this with your facial hair, you’ll want to regularly shampoo your facial hair with a shampoo that’s designed for beards. Doing this will not only clean your hair, but it will also work to clean the skin underneath too, which will decrease itchiness and irritation. That being said, please note that you don’t want to shampoo your beard every day. This will actually result in dried-out hair and skin — the last thing you want.

Additionally, we highly recommend looking for a sulfate-free shampoo, as this is the best for your hair. Sulfates are commonly found in shampoos, and can actually damage your hair! To avoid sulfates, simply check the ingredients when you’re shopping for shampoo products. However, the natural shampoo section is probably the easiest place to find a sulfate-free shampoo in your favorite store! (This goes for your hair too — avoid sulfates!)

Keep It Conditioned

Where shampoo works to remove grease, oils, dirt, and more from your hair, conditioning your hair works to reintroduce moisture to your hair to keep it healthy and hydrated. When your hair and skin are dry, you’ll feel itchy! To combat itchy, dry skin and facial hair, embrace beard conditioners and beard oil. Like we mentioned, these reintroduced much-needed moisture after shampooing your facial hair.

What’s more, beard oil is the magical substance that makes your beard glisten magnificently once it’s applied.

Using Beard Oil

To use beard oil, just follow these simple steps!

  1. Put a dime-sized dollop of beard oil onto one of your palms. More than this will result in a beard that looks greasy.
  2. Rub the oil into your palms. Start massaging the oil into your beard where the hair and skin meet — this moisturizes your skin and your beard. It does not matter if your beard is dry or damp!
  3. Massage the beard oil through the rest of your beard. Keep working down from where your skin and hair meet, and go until you’ve reached the tips of your beard hairs.
  4. If you live in an especially dry climate, repeat this process two to three times a day for the best results.

Shave Better

Finally, when you are maintaining facial hair over a period of time, you need to be sure that you’re practicing proper beard grooming! If you’re abusing your beard or taking poor care of the hair, chances are that your beard won’t look too good.

To do this, don’t over-trim your beard. While you may think the path to your desired beard requires meticulous, constant trimming to obtain the shape you want, that’s actually not the case! In fact, you want to let your beard grow for a couple of weeks in-between trimming sessions. All you need are some scissors and a steady hand! Once your beard has grown out, simply trim what’s required to achieve a rounded shape.
